A third-generation firefighter with roots in both Greenwood and Bloomington(Indiana), Chief James “Jayme” Washel brings quality knowledge in leadership and fire service management to the Greenwood Fire Department. With this experience, he holds a vision of excellence and top-level care for the citizens of Greenwood. Hired on the Bloomington Fire Department in 2001, Chief Washel has held many ranks including Bloomington Fire Department’s Deputy Chief and some time as their acting Chief before being appointed Chief of the Greenwood Fire Department in August 2023.
Chief Washel moved from Bloomington to Greenwood at a young age and graduated from Greenwood High School before leaving for Purdue University on a football scholarship. After leaving Purdue, he was signed with the Cincinnati Bengals for a short time before suffering an ankle injury. It was at this time he pursued a career in the fire service. Now, over two decades later in the fire service, the knowledge and expertise brought to Greenwood is like none other. A growing community and a growing department, Chief Washel is full-speed ahead in assuring the best department for GFD’s members, and unparalleled care & response for the residents and visitors of Greenwood.
