Fire investigations

The Fire Code Enforcement and Investigation Division has two distinct, yet overlapping roles: (1) Enforcement of the Indiana Fire Code and the City of Greenwood Fire Ordinance for all new and existing businesses, industries, and the continuously growing subdivision communities and (2) Investigation of the origin and cause of reported fires. To contact a member of Fire Code Enforcement and Investigations please email Tracy Rumble or Ryan Angrick.

emergency medical services

The Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Division is responsible for training and maintaining the certification of the EMTs (Emergency Medical Technicians), Advanced EMTs, and Paramedics for the City of Greenwood. The division operates as an Advanced Life Support Non-Transport at the Paramedic level.

special operations

In addition to normal fire department operations, the Greenwood Fire Department also employs a Hazardous Materials Response Team and Water Rescue Team.

Special Operations encompasses any response that does not fall in the traditional services of fire and emergency medical services.  The primary disciplines of Special Operations are Ice and Top Water Response, Hazardous Materials Response, and Vehicle and Machinery Extrication.

TRAINING

The Training Division’s goal is to provide progressive, state-of-the-art training to 100+ firefighters, both full-time and part-time, on three (3) shifts at four (4) separate firehouses. Weekly shift trainings are coordinated in all areas of fire service and special operations response, keeping firefighters up-to-date on new techniques and familiar with existing industry standards.

PUBLIC EDUCATION & OUTREACH

The department visits all Greenwood Community Elementary Schools twice each year. Spring visits include our dual purpose Safety Trailer where grades K-2 receive fire safety training and grades 3-5 receive severe weather training. In the Fall, all children learn Stop, Drop, and Roll as well as many other fire safety facts.

By the time students reach middle school, they have received training directly from our firefighters 12 times.

GFD also offers station tours, field trips and a number of public safety education opportunities. To schedule a tour or field trip, or to learn more about GFD on-site safety sessions, please email the department or call 317.882.2599.

HONOR GUARD

The Greenwood Fire Department Honor Guard was formed in 1997 with the primary purpose of representing the fire department and the City of Greenwood with the highest degree of honor. The members of the Honor Guard work tirelessly to set high standards in their preparation, execution, and professionalism.

Since its inception, the Greenwood Fire Department Honor guard has participated in multiple funeral services for fallen members of public safety, presented the colors for Indianapolis Colts, Indiana Pacers, and Indianapolis Indians games, and led several parades.

In recent years, the Honor Guard has been participating in the National Fallen Firefighter Memorial Weekend at Arlington Cemetery. The group has also participated in multiple national competitions and is proud to be FDIC 5 time National Champions in 2003, 2005, 2007, 2008 and 2009.

PUBLIC INFORMATION & COMMUNICATIONS

The Communications Division is responsible for maintaining all radios and computers used during the department's day-to-day operations. Additionally serving as the point of contact for the local news media and online social platforms during any fire department related event/incident that would necessitate the need for public knowledge or media coverage.

Chaplain & VICTIM ASSISTANCE

The Chaplain and Victim Assistance Division assists victims and their families with immediate emotional care and access to available resources as a result of illness, injury, fire or disaster. The division also provides individual and group care to Fire and EMS personnel in an effort to maintain emotional integrity when a critical incident has occurred.

FIREFIGHTER PLAY POCKET

Located in the lawn area on the west side of Fire Station 91-Headquarters, the firefighter play pocket is a collaborative project between the Greenwood Fire Foundation, Johnson County Community Foundation, Rotary Club of Greenwood and Greenwood Parks & Recreation.

The installation features several opportunities for local children to be active while having fun, including ladders, a winding slide and a replica firehouse. The Greenwood firefighters volunteered several hours of time consulting on and helping to construct the play pocket.
